Could the earth that we know be about to experience a change in the magnetism of its poles?  What does that mean for humanity?

Scientists at NASA know the magnetic pole has been moving north since the early 19th century, and the speed at which it moves is now increasing, leading scientists to believe that a reversal will come sooner rather than later.  They estimate that the change in poles will have little effect on the planet, apart from a slight weakening of the magnetic field.

Some studies think that a few things might be affected by the pole reversal – among them our current technology, as well as animals that may use magnetic fields to navigate, such as whales, bees, turtles and tuna.  Technology would be at risk from incoming solar flare activity that may increase due to holes in the magnetic field.   These holes could also increase the risk of skin cancer, some scientists argue.

During the change in polarity, there may be more than two poles, causing animals that may navigate using magnetic fields to become confused and change their habitual migration patterns.  Current changes in the magnetic field could be one of many factors in whales beaching themselves, but more research is required on how whales navigate before any conclusion can be reached.

What do you think?  Are conspiracy theorists right to assume that humans may be vulnerable during a magnetic pole reversal?  Or do the scientists have it right saying there will be little change?  Leave a comment letting me know what you think, or post to facebook, or G+.
