It has long been argued that the rise of technology in our lives can lead to social disconnection and isolation.  But did you know that there is a direct link between facebook and unhappiness?  Check out this article in the New Yorker that examines a study where scientists discovered just that.

Another article actually cites our online lives as taking away from ourselves offline, saying that we do and say things while behind the screen that we’d never dream of speaking about in real life.  This article argues that while addicting, social media do not make us lonely, we make ourselves lonely by the amount of time that we spend on them.

Facebook has also been coupled with a new epidemic that people have named “FOMO” – aka: Fear Of Missing Out – where people constantly check into sites to make sure they’re up to date, and text constantly to maintain even a shallow social connection rather than be alone.

What do you think about Facebook?  Friend or foe?  Let me know in the comments, or <ahem> on Facebook.
