Junk DNA: Do We Need it To Survive?

Last year, researchers decided that junk DNA wasn’t “junk” after all.  Missed that bit of news?  Here’s a catch-up for you.  Research is ongoing, and one of the most prominent sources of information about our hidden DNA and RNA is ENCODE, a research group that is searching for all the functional elements of the human genome, and trying to identify what they’re for.

So what role do you think your “junk” DNA plays?  Is it extra coding leftover from a time when we were a slightly different type of human, or is it DNA that is waiting to be “activated“?
