Mona’s Eyes – Image of the Week

With this rendering of Mona Lisa’s eyes I was trying to use as few slate tiles as I could and still get a recognizable image. The end result used only 270 tiles, picked from many thousands, which gives an almost painterly effect to the piece.

I spent a considerable amount of time tweeking the eyes, sometimes shaving down the slate to reveal a darker/lighter layer underneath to show more detail. It measures 8.5″ x 28″.

I need to sell some of my work because with all the artwork depicting eyes around the house, I feel like someone’s always watching me. At least there’s nothing in the bathroom… yet.
