Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ve probably at least heard of “Konmari”.  The tidying method, named after founder Marie Kondo, is a system of de-cluttering that uses the barometer of “joy” to decide what to keep and what to toss.  In her latest book, “spark joy”, Kondo claims that tidying your current home can actually lead you to find your dream home.  While individual results may vary, it’s never a bad plan to start your spring cleaning a little early.

Kondo also makes a distinction between “tidying” and “cleaning”.  This can prove to be very helpful to people wishing to break the cycle of clutter as Konmari claims to do.  “Tidying” is the act of putting objects back in their place.  According to the method, every object you own should have a proper home, and when you need to tidy, you just put an object back where it belongs.  “Cleaning” according to Kondo, is the act of getting rid of naturally accumulating dirt and debris.

Thus, she says, the mistake most people make is to clean before they tidy, or to try and tidy as they clean.  Tidy first, and then clean.  As Kondo says: “Life only truly begins when you have put your house in order.”
